Learning that occurs through the outdoor environment.

The natural world is a playground and a place of discovery for adults and children alike, it is a place for adventure, exploration and imagination as well as generating a deepening care and connectedness with our environment. We also know that the early and frequent positive experiences in the natural environment have a major impact on the healthy growth and development of a child's mind, body and spirit.

Here at Kids Count Pukekohe our children naturally love to be outside. The fresh air, large spaces and different sensory experiences offer our children time to explore, create and discover the wonders of their natural environment through spontaneous play, as they begin to develop confidence in using a variety of strategies for exploring, problem solving, asking questions listening, planning and observing – developing a perception of themselves as explorers-competent confident learners who ask questions and make discoveries.

Sand play is one of the many sensory texture's children enjoy as they explore the sense of touch and play, they feel the different textures of the sand and also the changes that happen through the different layers (dry, damp, wet) realizing that wet sand holds its shape better then dry.

Children develop a relationship with the natural environment and a knowledge of their place within the environment whilst having so much fun.
