Today our Kids Count Tawa Team celebrated 'pink shirt day' with and alongside our He Huarahi Tamariki school. The celebration involved wearing and decorating the centre in the colour pink. There were also fun activities, music, and of course a sharing of food, conversations, and laughter in an afternoon tea.
Celebrating Pink shirt day meant that we Kids Count Tawa and the teenage mum school are standing together, speaking up, and saying "STOP BULLYING".This is a plague we will not allow for it to happen to anyone of us, our loved ones, friends, and community. In saying so it is a harsh reality that this is happening within our schools, work places, homes, community, and society.
We as early childhood educators have the upper hand to make the changes within our community and society.Through our commitment and our Kids Count values which are 'big heart, every child matters, integrity, and hardworking' our children will "grow up as competent and confident learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body, and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge, that they make a valued contribution to society" (MOE, 1996, P.g 5).
So, from us here in Tawa we say be bold STAND UP, SPEAK OUT, AND STOP BULLYING!!! Make your change today.
